Why Soapmakers Trust Our Calculations
The Source of Truth for soap formulation — here's how we earn that.
Soapmaking involves real chemistry. When you calculate lye, accuracy matters.
Too little lye and oils won't fully saponify. Too much lye and the soap can become harsh or unsafe.
A reliable soap calculator must use accurate data, consistent formulas, and careful rounding. Simple SoapCalc is designed to do exactly that. This page explains how the calculator works and how it ensures every recipe is calculated correctly.
How Soap Calculators Work
Soap calculators convert the oils in a recipe into the correct amount of lye using saponification (SAP) values. Each oil requires a specific amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH) to fully react during saponification.
Simple SoapCalc performs these calculations using verified SAP values, transparent formulas, and consistent rounding rules. The result is an accurate lye amount for every oil in your recipe.
SAP Value Sourcing
Every calculation starts with saponification values. Ours are verified, not guessed.
- 150+ oils with verified SAP values sourced from established soapmaking references and cross-checked against datasets used by established calculators
- Both NaOH and KOH SAP values pre-calculated using the molecular weight ratio (56.1 / 40.0 = 1.403) — no manual conversion needed
- Every oil includes a fatty acid breakdown — lauric, oleic, linoleic, and more — so you can analyze properties like hardness, conditioning, and lather
- SAP values carried to 3 decimal places to minimize rounding drift across large batches
The Math Behind Every Recipe
No black boxes. Here's exactly how your lye and water amounts are calculated.
Lye formula:
oilWeight × SAP × (1 - superfat%) / purity
- Default 5% superfat — the standard safety margin that leaves extra oil unreacted for a milder bar
- Three water methods — water:lye ratio, lye concentration, or percent of oils — so you can work the way you prefer
- Safety minimum enforced — a 1:1 water:lye ratio floor prevents dangerously concentrated lye solutions
- Dual lye support — NaOH for bar soap, KOH for liquid soap, or a custom hybrid split
- Citric acid compensation — when you add citric acid for harder water, the calculator adjusts lye using published factors (0.624g NaOH or 0.842g KOH per gram of citric acid)
You don't need to understand the math to use the calculator — but we believe you should be able to see how it works.
Precision Where It Matters
Rounding errors compound across a recipe. We apply consistent precision at every step.
- Grams — displayed to 1 decimal place
- Ounces — displayed to 2 decimal places
- SAP values — carried to 3 decimal places internally
- Percentages — shown as whole numbers for readability
- Consistent rounding — the same rules apply everywhere in the app, so numbers always add up
Tested, Not Guessed
Trust isn't a claim — it's a test suite. Every change to the calculation engine must pass these tests before it ships.
- Over 1,000 automated tests covering lye calculations, water methods, superfat, citric acid, master batch, and recipe predictions
- Real-world recipe validation — 100% Castile, beginner blends, liquid soap formulas are all tested against known-good values
- Cross-validated against established online lye calculators including SoapCalc.net, SoapMakingFriend, and others
- Floating-point tolerance — comparisons use a 0.001g threshold to catch drift without false failures
Works Offline, Every Time
Your calculator should work when you need it — even without a signal.
- Oil database bundled in the app — no download required, no server dependency
- All calculations run on-device — nothing is sent to a server to get your numbers
- Recipes save locally first — your work is never lost to a bad connection
- Cloud sync is optional (Pro feature), not required — the app is fully functional without an account
One Engine, Every Path
Whether you type oils manually, import a recipe from a photo, use Blend Advisor to improve a recipe, adjust it by hand in Tweaker, or describe what you want to AI — the same calculation engine produces the result.
- No shortcuts for different entry points
- No special paths that skip validation
- Every recipe passes through the same math before it's saved
Interfaces can change. Entry points can expand. The calculation engine does not compromise.
Cross-Validation with Established Calculators
Simple SoapCalc calculations are validated against established soap calculators including SoapCalc.net and SoapMakingFriend.
Test recipes — including beginner blends, Castile soap, and liquid soap formulas — are checked against known-good lye values on every update, so any drift in the math is caught before it ships. Small differences from other calculators are normal, since each draws its SAP values from different published sources.
This helps ensure calculations remain accurate across updates.
