Why Simple SoapCalc exists
"I built Simple SoapCalc because I wanted a calculator, not a chemistry lab.
Other tools buried the basics under options I didn't need, and I was tired of retyping recipes from screenshots, books, and videos.
I just wanted safe numbers I could trust — and a faster way to get back to making soap.
So I built one."
That's the rule Simple SoapCalc was built on. It still is.
Simple SoapCalc was built by a soapmaker who needed a better tool.
The existing calculators worked, but they weren't built for how I actually make soap. I'd find a recipe in a YouTube video or an Instagram post, then spend minutes retyping oils into a calculator with dozens of settings I didn't use. The tools felt like they were designed for chemists, not makers.
So I built a calculator that does what I needed: import a recipe from a photo, get safe lye numbers, and get back to making soap. Every feature since then — Blend Advisor, Tweaker, Oil Swap, Make Soap mode — came from the same place: real problems I ran into at the bench.
I care about accuracy because lye isn't forgiving. The math has to be right. That's why the app has over 1,000 automated tests, verified SAP values, and cross-validation against established calculators. I use this calculator for my own recipes — it has to work.
The original goal was simple: enter oils, get safe lye amounts. But soapmakers don't always start with oils.
Recipes come from everywhere — YouTube tutorials, Instagram posts, faded recipe cards, labels on artisan soaps. They come as ideas before they become numbers. "I want something gentle with good lather." "What if I used more coconut oil?"
So the product expanded in both directions — upstream (how you start) and downstream (what you do next):
Different ways to start. Different ways to understand, fix, and improve. Same math underneath.
Here's what matters: there is one calculation engine. It doesn't change based on how you got there or what you do next.
AI can suggest. It can help you explore. But nothing gets saved that doesn't pass validation. Nothing bypasses the math.
Interfaces can change. Entry points can expand. The calculation engine does not compromise.
Not every soapmaker needs the same thing. But they all need the math to be right.
Same tool. Different depth at every stage.
Simple SoapCalc is not:
Not because those tools aren't useful — they are. But adding them would mean losing focus. The moment we become "all-in-one," we stop being simple.
If you need those features, a different app is the right choice. We'd rather do one thing well than many things adequately.
Soap making is a craft. It involves real chemistry, real decisions, real consequences. Lye is not forgiving.
A good tool supports your judgment. It doesn't replace it. It gives you accurate information and gets out of the way so you can do the work.
That's what Simple SoapCalc aims to be: a tool you can trust, wherever your recipes come from.
